Bioenzyme to the rescue!

As a child, necklace road and tank bund road were my favourite spots. But, if anyone asks me about Hyderabad today, they are no longer the oh-so-good things that come to my mind. Why? I'd say it's because the man-made lake - Hussain Sagar, which adds beauty to these roads, has become frothy and polluted. The story of the other lakes in our very own city, Hyderabad, is not any different!

If you are a true Hyderabadi and would want to talk about your city with pride, here is a small step you can take as an individual.

We might not be able to stop or reduce the industrial waste by ourselves, but, can we control things that we release from our households? Absolutely, yes!

You may ask me - How?

Bio-Enzyme is the answer!

You usually check-in to the supermarket, walk through different aisles to pick up the following - floor cleaner, toilet cleaner, dish wash soap, detergent powder, another cleaner for glass surfaces... and the list goes on. Wouldn't it be more convenient if we can have only one cleaner instead of a ton of these? This is exactly where bio-enzyme will come to your rescue.

Now, you might have questions like- What is bio-enzyme? Is it a new brand? Is it expensive? Can I order it online? I am here to answers all those questions.

By now, you all would be internally screaming- Enough already, Radhika! Just tell us what Bio-Enzyme is all about.

I won't give you all a science lecture, but rather I'll explain how it is made and what products it can replace on your shelves. I first read about Bio-Enzyme on the Instagram handle of Suta Bombay. Their sarees smell amazing, and I learnt that they use Bio-enzyme to wash their sarees during the process. And yes, you can make Bio-Enzyme at home and no fancy ingredients are required!

INGREDIENTS

  1. Any citrus peels (sweet lemon, orange, lemon)

  2. Water

  3. Jaggery

But what you need to get right is the proportions-

  • 1-litre water

  • 300 grams citrus peels

  • 100 grams jaggery

The jaggery helps the citrus peel to ferment and turns the liquid into alcohol.

PROCEDURE

  1. Take a plastic container (stick to using plastic only). You may reuse the container.

  2. Add the mentioned proportions and close the lid.

  3. There should be enough space left in the container, for the gases to be released.

  4. For the first month, open the lid and shake the container every morning. This will help in releasing the gases.

  5. Do not disturb it for another 2 months.

  6. After the mentioned 3 months one just has to strain the liquid and your bio enzyme is ready for use.

If you want it to be ready in a month, you can add yeast to it.

Now, this liquid gold can be used for multiple purposes like cleaning your dishes, the floor, bathrooms, etc., It can also be used to wash clothes with a little addition of soapnut solution.

My first batch of Bio-Enzyme is 2 and a half months old and it smells amazing already.

Stay tuned for my next article to know about my experience with Bio-Enzyme.
